Wireless Water Meters: Ideal Use Case for Density

Hong Kong is set to begin replacing their current water meters with AMR smart meters. Wireless water meters can help them save even more.

Hong Kong, the city-state with over 7 million people, has motioned that they will begin rollout of installing over 450,000 advanced water meters in the coming years.

This motion was the result of an earlier pilot project involving 350 smart meters that found the viability of automated meter reading (AMR) systems. This is a great move for a city that has one of the highest population densities in the world at over 57,000 persons per square kilometer, making accountable utility use in these condensed residential areas a top priority.

While AMR systems are preferable to manual read meters, they still have to contend with huge cost issues: These can range from the heavy cost of removing old cabling to install the new meter systems in retrofits, to new projects that need to allocate specific spaces for this data collection to occur.

Wireless water meters can help alleviate this problem: In retrofit cases, wireless water meters can be a simple plug-and-play solution, as the meters are able to wirelessly communicate to the receiving gateway, reducing the need for invasive retrofit work.

For new projects, installing wireless water meters can help developers reduce the need specific utility rooms per floor, allowing for more space for residential use. Further, wireless communications in metering can allow for real-time leak detection or abnormal use detection. Read more about how wireless water meters can help your next retrofit or new build.
