The BC government’s CleanBC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate program is helping new and existing residential developments by providing a rebate of up to 50% to help buy and install EV chargers at work and at home. $10 million has recently been invested into the program as part of the 2021 provincial budget in an effort to move the province towards becoming a net-zero society.
The rebate program matches the increasing popularity of electric vehicles as well as the increased demand for EV charging stations. The Go Electric EV Charger Rebate program will allow new and existing multi-residential developments and workplaces to receive up to a 50% rebate to a maximum of $2,000 per EV charging station. Not in a condo or an apartment? There’s also a 50% rebate with a maximum of $350 per detached household, including duplexes and townhomes.
Almost 10% Of Vehicles Purchased In BC Are Electric
The Sauder School of Business published a blog on the state of EV adoption in BC written by Professor Werner Antweiler. Antweiler found four key insights:
- Eight to nine percent of new vehicles purchased in BC are electric
- The fastest-growing EV adoption occurs within Metro Vancouver, where short-distance driving was most frequent.
- EV vehicles are reaching price parity to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, causing more drivers to switch to an EV vehicle
- Driving electric is almost four times cheaper than driving a gas-powered vehicle in BC
It’s interesting to note that there is a disparity between urban and rural EV adoption rates, but they are slowly increasing overall. As EV vehicles and chargers become more available this number is expected to rise further.
How Do You Calculate EV Charging Consumption?
Installing an EV charger brings up a serious question: how would you track and measure the electrical consumption so that the right tenant would be paying for their use? This is a common question property managers and building owners have when faced with the growing demand to install EV chargers in new or existing buildings.
