Excellence in Sustainability and Athleticism in Pyeongchang 2018

A person focused on utility management world wide

When people normally think about the Winter Olympics, they normally think of bobsled teams, hockey players, and even curling teams. But instead of only athletes performing in Pyeongchang, so will the buildings and the infrastructure through sustainability-based practices and innovative technology.

Sustainability, Certified

These sustainability efforts include a high speed railway, a mass fleet of electric vehicles, and energy efficient buildings. In fact, Pyeongchang 2018 has received the ISO 20121 certification, a sustainability standard for whole events – the first for any Winter Olympic Games, and the third for any Olympic Games, trailing behind the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Olympic Plaza, International Broadcast Centre, and Olympic Sliding Centre will utilize innovative technology from the DOW Chemical company to help keep viewers warm, while also keeping the ice at a consistent temperature. For instance, DOW’s advanced polyisocyanurate panels are useful in insulating facilities in PyeongChang, where the temperature can fluctuate between 5° to -12° Celsius, while their polyurethane spray foam will ensure the ice that the Olympic athletes perform on will stay ice cold. Read more about the technical details here directly from DOW.

Regardless, it will be another breathtaking performance by athletes all over the world. And if you were planning on making a trip down to PyeongChang, fear not: there will be poutine when you get there.
