Energy Benchmarking Training Offered By CaGBC

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) is launching new training for energy benchmarking strategies and regulation for both private and public sector stakeholders. With reporting of annual benchmarking results for large commercial buildings soon mandatory across Ontario, the courses will offer stakeholders valuable training to enable compliance.  Course material will introduce the general processes for accurate data collection, show participants how to create a building profile and successfully use ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and discuss Ontario’s upcoming Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) regulation. Several other jurisdictions, including Vancouver and Manitoba, are also considering similar legislation.

Benchmarking is part the successful management of building utility consumption. The formula starts with identifying potential energy inefficiencies through the collection of metering data, then benchmarking the building which will lead to actionable insights. Benchmarking a building’s utility consumption can be done in several ways: against past performance; against similar buildings within a portfolio; against an external data set of comparable buildings and against areas in the same building. In a recent US study, the  EPA found that buildings that were benchmarked consistently reduced energy use by an average of 2.4 percent per year, for a total savings of 7 percent. And, buildings that started out as poor performers saved even more. See EPA’s Portfolio Manager DataTrends series for more information.

REMI ‘s recent story highlighted the CGaBC’s new training announcement, with this comment from CaGBC President and CEO Thomas Mueller:

“By implementing these practices, building owners and managers have access to key data on the performance of their buildings, which enables them to make strategic investments in operational improvements, technology upgrades, and retrofits in an effort to conserve more energy, reduce emissions and realize financial savings.”
