New Energy Reporting Requirements Coming To Ontario

Own or manage a multi residential building in Ontario? You’ll soon be required by law to report on their energy use. These new requirements for annual energy reporting on the overall energy and water use of large buildings are part of the Green Energy Act, legislation originally set in place in 2009 to encourage energy conservation, among other things.

Larger buildings will have to act quick, as they will be impacted first: Multi residential buildings with more than 10 units, that are also 100,000 square feet or more, will be required to file their first report by July 1, 2019 for the 2018 calendar year. Smaller multi residential buildings at 50,000 square feet will be required to file their first report the following year, on July 1, 2020 for the 2019 calendar year.

The reporting required won’t be as simple as sending in utility bills however; the data must be input using ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®, an industry standard tool developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency used specifically for benchmarking.

Make Energy Reporting Easy with MeterConnex

QMC can help: Our web-based energy reporting software MeterConnex can compile and document building level data for any of your needs. Further, we have recently been approved for data exchange with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. This means that we will be able to seamlessly and directly submit our customer’s metering data to ENERGY STAR on their behalf. Both MeterConnex and ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager will be able to compile and document building level data for any needs.

While it may seem troublesome at first for legislation to mandate annual reporting, there are positive opportunities here: With utility costs rising year over year, measuring consumption and then making informed changes to reduce it will save costs down the road. Further, non-compliant sites will be ineligible for future energy efficiency incentives.
